Damascene or Koftgari work, in Pure Gold & Silver, the art of Damascene & Koftgari is alive with some traditional swordsmith families and still practiced in india where some of the beautiful weapons are still being made and available to collectors of it's kindGold is for the mistress - silver for the maid Copper for the craftsman cunning in his trade. "Good!" said the Baron, sitting in his hall But iron - cold iron is master of them all. Rudyard Kipling (1865 - 1936)
What Is Damascus?Damascus - The Pattern Wielded Steel The term damascus refers to the material achieved through a process of forge wielding two or more different metals to achieve a laminated bar of multiple layers. When finished this bar may contain more than 500 layers of metals. The name damascus was given as pattern wielded steel was reintroduced to the Western world through Damascus Syria. Once a bar of damascus has been created and patterned, a visible contrast may be formed by treating the surface of the metal. This treatment can range from acid etching to browning or bluing the surface - depending on the materials used in the bar. The pattern shown will depend on the process used during forging and the process used to shape the piece being worked. The pattern will look different if the bar was twisted or if material was removed in specific ways prior to the final forge. The pattern can also vary depending upon the thickness of materials making up the composite of the bar and the type of grind used when removing material for the knife bevel (if a knife is being made).
